RECOVERY PROCESS

POST OPERATIVE CARE

Post Operative Care

To control pain after surgery, local anaesthesia is injected during surgery via the insertion of a small tube. By doing this, the need for analgesics injections is avoided and it has been shown to provide superior pain control.

On return from theatre the operative site will be covered with a dressing and the arm is usually immobilised in a poly-sling. This is for comfort and occasionally, to make sure the arm is immobilised, depending on the type of surgery carried out. The use of the sling will change from one condition to another.

Surgery usually requires an overnight stay in hospital but the development of new pumps to inject the local anaesthesia means that we will very soon be able to carry out shoulder procedures as day cases.

On discharge, patients are given contact numbers in case of any queries, but the Spire Hartswood Hospital team are here if you have any queries, just call on 01277 232 525.
